People usually believe you either have confidence, or you don’t, it’s not usually talked about as something that can be built.
I’m Alessandra from Dóchas Psychological in Spruce Grove, and I think confidence is a skill. It’s something you learn or develop over time. In essence, it is a feeling of trust in your own abilities and judgment. It’s about believing that you’ll find your way through life’s harder moments.

Confidence is a Spiral Staircase
An analogy I often come back to is that growth feels like climbing a spiral staircase. You may circle around to the same challenges, the same doubts, but each time, you’re a little higher up the staircase. You may be looking at the same issue as before, but with more perspective, more clarity, and more strength. That’s how confidence is built.
Remember, self-compassion and treating yourself with kindness helps to foster a deeper sense of self-trust. So if you imagine your spiral staircase, let compassion be the handrail. It’s what softens your self-judgment and allows you to meet yourself with kindness.
Even when you feel like you’ve taken a step back in your journey, know that it’s just part of the process. Watch my video or keep reading to learn how to build confidence.
How to Build Confidence
Get comfortable with the uncomfortable: Think of the times that you tried something scary and survived the discomfort, or when you spoke up even though your voice was shaky. Stepping outside your comfort zone and taking small steps to challenge yourself are big confidence-builders.
Positive self-talk or affirmations: Positivity can help you forge confidence in the tougher moments and can help you learn what it means to stay with yourself. Building confidence is a journey, so it is important to be patient and celebrate your progress along the way.
Practice mindfulness & reflection: This helps to keep you in the present moment. It creates space to create awareness in your thoughts and emotions. It helps you notice patterns of what may be triggering any negative reactions you have.
Set small goals: This makes growth feel manageable. Each small goal you meet is a little win that you can celebrate. Achievable goals create a sense of progress that will help motivate you, as it reinforces your belief in your own ability.
