From Lost to Aligned: Finding Yourself in 2026

It’s the start of a new year, which is a time when so many of us start reflecting on who we are, what we want, and where we’re headed in the next year.

It’s Sierra on the Dóchas blog this week, here to discuss those times in life when you feel a bit lost, and how you can get yourself back on track.

You may seem to have it all: the job, the friends, and some kind of workout plan. Yet something still doesn’t feel quite right. If you’re in your 20s and 30s, it’s very common to feel this way. This comes up in therapy for many people of this age.

You might think, “I’m doing everything I’m supposed to, but I still don’t feel happy.” You move through the day with a sense of emptiness, almost floating, living life on autopilot. Yet you know there’s more to life than just this existence. If this is you, hear this: you’re not alone, and this lost feeling has a purpose. This experience is a sign that something deeper in you is asking to be heard.

Reclaiming Your Life When You Feel Lost

There’s a common checklist many people have been taught to follow to be “successful”:

  • Get a job.
  • Make money.
  • Find a partner.
  • Be stable.

And maybe you’ve done most of those things. But then one day, you look around and think, this doesn’t actually feel like my life.

Your values are shifting, and the life you built no longer fits the way it used to. This can leave you feeling even more lost, but it’s also a powerful moment

It’s the beginning of uncovering yourself in a deeper way and understanding what actually fits for you, rather than what you thought you were supposed to want.

Small Steps to Rediscover Yourself When You Feel Lost

A few small, intentional shifts can make a huge difference in your life.

1. A Grounding Question for When You’re Feeling Lost

“What’s one part of my life where I feel most like myself?”

This could be anything: a hobby, a favourite song, a place, a group of people, or a topic that excites you. This is the part of you that feels most natural and alive. It can get swallowed by your daily routines, but it’s still there. When you follow this feeling, you start finding pieces you thought were lost, and you move closer to what you truly need.

2. Stop Comparing Timelines

Stop scrolling. Social media can make you feel like you’re falling behind, or like part of yourself is lost. If you notice that you keep reaching for your phone and scrolling whenever you’re bored, you may need to consider a dopamine detox. Alicia wrote a great blog about unplugging and finding yourself beyond the doom-scroll.

Put your phone away and go back to step one; it will guide you toward an activity that actually feels fulfilling rather than draining.

If you need a quiet space to think, Jubilee Park in Spruce Grove is an amazing spot for slowing down and hearing yourself more clearly. Sometimes stepping outside into nature gives you the clarity and grounding you need.

3. Finding Connection When You’re Lost

Building connection and community gives you a deeper sense of purpose and meaning in your life. Maybe that means reconnecting with an old friend you haven’t seen in a long time or joining a cause you feel called to. When you get outside of your own head and back into your community, you give your days a greater sense of accomplishment and value.

Your body is wired for connection, and when your conversations happen only through text, a huge part of the energy and fuel your body needs from socializing is lost.

4. A Simple Weekly Check-In

Once a week, take a few minutes to yourself and reflect:

  • What felt good this week?
  • What drained you?
  • What do you want more of in your life right now?

Write it down. This simple pause can help you notice where you’ve felt grounded and where you’ve felt a bit lost. Your answers will shape your choices for the week ahead.

You’re Allowed to Want More from your Life

If you want more from your life, it just means that you’ve grown beyond what you currently have and thought you wanted.

One of the goals of therapy is to create a life that feels authentic to you. It gives you a chance to ask yourself, “What kind of life do I truly want to create for myself?” and then build a plan to move toward that vision.
