Family Therapy in Spruce Grove

In-person family therapy in Spruce Grove and virtual family therapy across Alberta.

When we think of family, the picture that I think most people wish for is “Little House on the Prairie”, but instead, some have something more like “Game of Thrones”.

Families can be complicated, even if they are, for the most part, functioning well.  They have to navigate all sorts of thematic issues: trying to get pregnant/start a family, having multiple children at once, the toddler “no” stage, having kids at different developmental stages, adolescent angst, their kids leaving home, and empty nest syndrome all while trying to survive financial pressures, opinions of extended family, loss, rebellion and independence, parenting disagreements, and trying to keep your own romantic relationship intact AND finding time for yourself as an individual.  YIKES!  For some, when you add any mental health, addiction, or traumatic issues, how can we be surprised when families crack under the strain?

And, let’s say your family has separated.  How do you then navigate all the parenting and financial decisions the come with these changes, especially if one or both parents blend with other families?

What Can Family Therapy Help With?

  • Family conflict and communication difficulties
  • Parenting disagreements
  • Co-parenting and separation
  • Blended family dynamics
  • Major family transitions
  • Children at different developmental stages
  • Grief, loss and other family stressors
  • Mental health or addiction concerns affecting the family
  • Changes in family roles and relationships
  • Feeling overwhelmed as a family
  • And more…

How Does Family Therapy Work?

Family therapy is pretty cool. Sometimes you’ll work as the whole group, sometimes in dyads (pairs), triads (threes), one parent with child, parents together, a couple of the kids together… you get the idea.   The point is, family therapy looks at the family as a system and explores what may be contributing to difficulties within that system.  The therapist works with the family to discover where the breakdown is and what’s maintaining it.  It’s similar to couples or relationship work in that the focus is on the overall family dynamic/relationship and not on the individual members.  It’s not about blaming one person in the family (scapegoating) and “fixing them”.  It’s about the system as a whole.

Family therapy is available in person at Dóchas Psychological in Spruce Grove or virtually across Alberta.
