Therapy for Adults in Spruce Grove

In-person therapy for adults in Spruce Grove and virtual therapy across Alberta.

I don’t know about you, but when I was a teen, I was very excited to think about all the freedom I’d have when I became an adult.  Staying up as late as I want, no homework, making my own decisions… heavenly!

Then came actual adulthood.  Can I just say zero stars, do not recommend?  Instead of having absolute freedom, I have absolute responsibility.  There’s no one coming to save me, no one who is paying my bills or having the answers.  It’s a life of the unknown, with more and more coming flying at us any second!  And we’re just expected to pivot and act like all is wonderful.  I mean, after all, we wished for this, didn’t we?

What Can Adult Therapy Help With?

  • Childhood trauma(s) and attachment wounds
  • Financial and work stress
  • Family stress
  • Parenting stress
  • Life transitions and managing the unknown
  • Loneliness and changing relationships
  • The overall burden of adulting
  • And more…

How Does Therapy for Adults Work?

There are a variety of approaches your practitioner might take.  Generally, they involve first making sure you have some resources to manage life outside of session.  These might be tangible like making referrals to other providers to work on finances or help you meet other adults with the same struggles.  Other resources to help manage life are what we call self-regulation: the ability to monitor and manage your own thoughts, emotions, behaviors, and attention by noticing when you’re under or over activated and helping your system adjust.  We need to do this so we can then excavate what’s really going on that’s keeping you stuck. This excavation typically occurs in talk therapy, where your practitioner will work with you to uncover what’s going on to help change occur.

Adult therapy is available in person at Dóchas Psychological in Spruce Grove or virtually across Alberta.
