In-person couples therapy in Spruce Grove and virtual couples therapy across Alberta.
How do we go from this:
“A match made in heaven”
“Head over heels”
“The other half”
“Two peas in a pod”
To this:
“Happy wife, happy life” (Total BS by the way.)
“Love means never having to say you’re sorry” (Excuse me, what?)
“The ball and chain” (Oh, that’s lovely.)
“What’s mine is mine, and what’s yours is mine.” (Well, that sounds fair.)
“Marriage is 50/50” (Nice try…)
Whether we’re married or not, being in a relationship can suck. Oh, and this can be for friendships too! There are times when we aren’t seen the way we want to be seen; we get hurt and don’t talk about it, leaving it to fester like gangrene until it slowly kills the relationship; we start to notice the things we used to be able to “let go” have become deal-breakers; and the person who we thought could read our minds actually doesn’t know us at all.
It’s not easy to navigate a meaningful relationship with someone else. Even when we think the person totally gets us, there are misunderstandings; inequities; losses (initial excitement, transitions, etc.); and a belief in myths that actually hurt our relationships, like “happy relationships never have arguments”, “don’t go to bed angry”, “they should be able to read my mind”, and “good relationships are easy (take no work)”. It’s no wonder that we sometimes need a translator to help us share what we most need to share to heal what’s going on with someone else.
Couples therapy can take a variety of forms. The focus is always on the relationship, rather than each individual person in it. The joint goal is to heal the relationship. The therapist acts as a translator and guide, keeping the couple focused on the joint goal. They may notice when individual stuff is interfering with the couples work and recommend resources for it, such as seeing an individual therapist; however, it is not about blaming. Sometimes the therapist may ask for individual sessions, equally provided, and sometimes they won’t. Every decision is made with the lens of preserving the safety of each person in the relationship while healing the relationship at the same time.
Couples therapy is available in person at Dóchas Psychological in Spruce Grove or virtually across Alberta.
