If you’ve ever wondered what a social worker actually does or whether we might be the right fit for your therapy journey, I’m here to provide some information on how we fit into the puzzle of mental health care!
Hi, I’m Jordan Nickurak, Dóchas’ newest social worker and therapist. Social workers have one of the most misunderstood roles in mental health care.
What Is A Social Worker?
What comes to your mind when you think of a social worker?
Many people often jump to images of overly soft “bleeding hearts”, or perhaps some more unflattering representations of cold, demanding public service workers buried in paperwork. Some people even think of us as being miracle workers who can swoop in and solve any problem!
The reality is that we are not magicians (though life would be easier with a magic wand!) We are caring, trained professionals who aim to walk alongside you as you work towards your goals and overall wellbeing.
In addition to offering mental health support, many social workers are also actively involved in advocacy to help shape communities and systems so we’re better able to respond to your needs.

How Do Social Workers Approach Therapy?
In many ways, you can expect a therapy session with a social worker to look very similar to a session with a regular therapist (see more about what to expect in therapy here).
Like other therapists, social workers in mental health settings are regulated professionals with training in providing therapy. What makes us unique is that social workers tend to see things in “the big picture.” What’s happening around you matters just as much as what’s happening inside you!
Instead of mostly focusing on what is happening within you (your thoughts, emotions, and experiences), we aim to also understand the relationships and spaces “in between” (like family dynamics, socioeconomic factors, cultural background, and community resources). This means we understand humans as being part of a large, complex web of relationships and connections that can have a huge impact on your mental health. We bring this uniquely broad lens into therapy.
Sessions often balance a focus on deep personal exploration, as well as examining how things like your community or social circles might help your overall wellbeing.
“System navigation” support is also a key component of social work practice and may be offered depending on your specific goals.

What Is “System Navigation” in Therapy?
As a social worker, I believe strongly in ensuring you have access to the community resources and support you need to thrive.
This could include access to funding, like Family Support for Children with Disabilities (FSCD), or community resources like peer groups and recreation. Many of these resources can be challenging to navigate and involve a complex application process.
This is where a social worker comes in! We are able to identify potential resources and support you and your family in getting connected to these supports through referrals and advocacy.
How Do I Know If A Social Worker Is A Good Fit To Be My Therapist?
A social worker might be a good fit to be your therapist if:
- You want someone to offer some practical tips and strategies to work towards your goals and overall wellness.
- You want someone to walk alongside you as you reflect and develop a deeper understanding of yourself.
- You want someone to consider the “big picture” in your overall wellbeing.
- You want someone to help navigate community resources and advocate for you.
- You want someone who understands how the world around you, your relationships, community, and life circumstances, shapes your mental health.
- You’re navigating a complex life situation that might involve more than just individual mental health support.
