How to Activate Your Internal Compass

Amelia here with your weekly Dóchas blog post. Today we will be talking about your internal compass. What is this? This is what I call your inner wisdom, your gut feeling, your inner knowing, and any other way to identify that as the expert in your own life, you know both what is best for you and what you need.

 

 

Why is your Internal Compass Important?

Now why is this important? Unfortunately, a lot of Western society tells us to find the answers outside of ourselves, or that we can’t trust our inner knowing. For example – the phrase “living the dream”. When you think of your life dream, what do you think of? Is it a big house, a fancy car, and having a lot of money? Those are all external goals that society tells us are signs that we have ‘made it’. 

 

 

While financial stability is a big factor in this life, the dreams that many of my clients are working towards are not actually their internal dreams, they are dreams they have been told to work towards. For example: “if you have a big house, all of your problems will be solved”. What happens when you achieve your material dream, whatever it is, and you still don’t feel good inside? This is where our inner compass comes in. Instead of trying to achieve the dreams we have been told we ‘should’ be chasing, take the time to consider what you actually want. Are you working too much for a future you ‘should’ want without taking the time to appreciate the life you have in the present? 

 

 

 

It can be overwhelming to admit that maybe we don’t actually know what we want or where we want to go. That’s where therapy comes in. We have the skills and knowledge to hold space for you to explore what your inner compass is trying to tell you, so you are not trying to course correct on your own.
