Do I Have ADHD?

You’ve probably seen ADHD talked about everywhere lately- on TikTok, on Facebook, in podcasts, in conversations with friends who are newly diagnosed and finally feeling like things make sense.

And while it’s great that we’re talking about it more, all that noise can make it hard to know what’s true, what’s oversimplified, and what applies to you or someone you love.

Hello! 👋🏼 It’s Rachael here on the Dóchas blog. ADHD affects approximately 5% of children and 3% of adults and in my work, I see how often it goes misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and missed entirely. So today I want to cut through the noise and give you a clear, honest picture of what ADHD is, how the symptoms can affect your life, and what you can do about it.

Please note that this blog is for educational purposes only and is not a diagnostic tool. If you think you may have ADHD, please reach out to a registered mental health professional.

What Is ADHD?

ADHD is a neurodevelopmental disorder, meaning it originates in how the brain develops, and it’s characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, impulsivity, or a combination of all three. At a neurological level, ADHD is linked to lower levels of norepinephrine, a neurotransmitter that works alongside dopamine to help us pay attention, stay focused, and regulate our behaviour.

It’s important to note that ADHD is not a character flaw, a lack of effort, or a result of a bad upbringing. ADHD is a brain-based condition.

What Are Common Symptoms Of ADHD?

ADHD shows up differently from person to person, but here’s a breakdown of the three main presentations:

Inattention

This isn’t just getting distracted occasionally- we all do that. Inattention in ADHD looks like:

  • Frequently wandering off task or losing focus mid-activity
  • Struggling to follow through on tasks even when you want to
  • Being disorganized in ways that feel really overwhelming
  • Missing details that others seem to catch easily

It’s worth noting that inattention in ADHD is not caused by defiance or a lack of understanding, the brain just has difficulty sustaining focus consistently.

Hyperactivity

In children, hyperactivity often looks like excessive running, climbing, jumping, or talking. But here’s something important: as people move into adulthood, hyperactivity doesn’t necessarily disappear. In adults, it often shows up as:

  • Extreme restlessness or an inability to “switch off”
  • Constant fidgeting or tapping
  • Feeling like your mind is always running at full speed, even when your body is still
  • A sense of nonstop internal activity that others might not even see

Impulsivity

Impulsivity involves acting quickly without thinking through consequences, because the brain’s braking system works differently. This can look like:

  • Interrupting others frequently or struggling to wait your turn
  • Making significant decisions without fully thinking them through
  • Seeking immediate rewards over long-term outcomes
  • Taking risks that feel compelling in the moment but create problems later

What Are The Effects of ADHD?

Left unaddressed, ADHD can affect many areas of life including:

  • Academic and occupational performance
  • Relationships and social connection
  • Self-esteem and emotional regulation
  • Risk of accidental injury (particularly due to impulsivity)

This can feel overwhelming to read, but here’s the important part: ADHD is treatable and manageable.

There are effective options available, including medication, behaviour therapy, individual therapy, and educational support. Many people with ADHD are able to live incredibly full, creative, and successful lives.
